Tipping etiquette is far from universal. In the US and Canada, it is effectively required and servers rely on it as income. In much of Europe, service is often included in the bill, and an extra 5–10% for good service is plenty. In Japan, tipping can be perceived as rude — polite service is considered standard, not a bonus. In Australia, tipping is appreciated but not expected. If you are unsure, checking local norms before your trip saves you awkward moments at checkout.

Technically, the tip is owed on the pre-tax subtotal — servers do not earn money from sales tax. In practice, most people tip on the post-tax total because it is faster and slightly more generous. Both are accepted. If you want the strictly-correct answer, use the pre-tax amount from your receipt as the bill total.

Two approaches are common. An even split divides the total equally — fast, easy, and fair when everyone ordered similar amounts. An itemized split has each person pay for their own items plus their share of tip and tax — fairer when orders differ dramatically.
