How to calculate a percentage

A percentage is a part of a whole expressed per 100. The basic formula is (part / whole) × 100. For example, 45 out of 60 = 75%.

There are three common calculations:

  • Percentage of a number. 20% of 150 → 150 × 0.20 = 30. Useful for tips, discounts, and taxes.
  • One number as a percentage of another. 15 of 60 → (15 / 60) × 100 = 25%. Useful for goals and budgets.
  • Percentage change. 80 → 100 is a 25% increase; 100 → 80 is a 20% decrease.
