How to calculate a discount

A discount reduces the price of a product by a specific amount or percentage. The basic formula is Final price = Original price × (1 − Discount% / 100). For example, an $80 shirt at 30% off becomes $80 × 0.70 = $56.

This calculator covers three common scenarios:

  • Sale price. Enter the original price and the discount — either as a percentage or as a flat amount — to instantly see what you’ll pay and how much you save.
  • Double discount. Apply two discounts in sequence, like "40% off + additional 20% on sale items". The second discount applies to the already-reduced price, so 40% + 20% is a 52% effective discount, not 60%.
  • Find original. Reverse the calculation: if you paid $75 after 25% off, the original price was $100. Handy for checking whether an advertised "was" price is genuine.
